Exactly what appears in the AZ-900 exam, domain by domain. How Microsoft weights each topic, what question formats to expect, and where to focus your revision time.

Exam Overview

The AZ-900 Microsoft Azure Fundamentals exam covers three domains. Microsoft publishes the exact weightings in the official Skills Measured document โ€” which is worth downloading directly from Microsoft Learn before you start studying, as it's updated periodically.

DomainWeightingApprox. questions (out of 50)
Cloud Concepts25โ€“30%12โ€“15
Azure Architecture and Services35โ€“40%17โ€“20
Azure Management and Governance30โ€“35%15โ€“17

The exam has 40โ€“60 questions. Most candidates see around 45โ€“50. You have 60 minutes. The pass mark is 700 out of 1000, which is approximately 70%.

๐Ÿ’ก Most important insight from the weighting: Azure Architecture and Services is the largest domain and the most varied โ€” it covers compute, networking, storage, identity, and security. Many candidates under-prepare for it by focusing too heavily on Cloud Concepts, which is actually the smallest domain.

Domain 1 โ€” Cloud Concepts (25โ€“30%)

This domain tests whether you understand what cloud computing is, why organisations use it, and the key models and concepts that underpin it. It's the most conceptual domain โ€” no Azure-specific services are covered here.

What Microsoft actually tests

Common question patterns

"A company is migrating their on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL Database. Which service model does Azure SQL Database represent?" โ€” PaaS.

"Which cloud benefit allows a company to automatically add resources during peak traffic and remove them when demand drops?" โ€” Elasticity (not scalability โ€” scalability is the ability to scale, elasticity is automatic scaling).

โš ๏ธ Most common mistake in Domain 1: Confusing elasticity and scalability. Scalability = ability to increase/decrease resources. Elasticity = automatic scaling based on demand. Microsoft tests this distinction directly.

Domain 2 โ€” Azure Architecture and Services (35โ€“40%)

This is the largest domain and covers the broadest range of topics. It's split into five main areas:

Core architecture (infrastructure)

Compute services

Networking

Storage

Identity, access, and security

Our AZ-900 practice app lets you filter by topic โ€” drill just Architecture or just Networking.

Domain 3 โ€” Azure Management and Governance (30โ€“35%)

This domain is often underestimated. It covers cost management, monitoring, governance tools, and compliance โ€” all highly testable topics that candidates who focus only on services tend to neglect.

Cost management

Governance and compliance

Monitoring and management tools

SLAs and support

Question Formats to Expect

AZ-900 uses several question formats. Knowing what to expect reduces exam-day surprises:

Where to Focus Your Revision Time

Based on the domain weightings and common candidate weak spots, here's how to allocate your revision time:

TopicPriorityWhy
VPN Gateway vs ExpressRoute๐Ÿ”ด HighAppears in almost every exam
IaaS vs PaaS vs SaaS examples๐Ÿ”ด HighScenario questions throughout
Storage redundancy (LRS/ZRS/GRS/GZRS)๐Ÿ”ด HighMultiple question angles
Cost tools (Pricing Calc vs TCO vs Cost Mgmt)๐Ÿ”ด HighFrequently confused, always tested
Shared responsibility model๐Ÿ”ด HighGuaranteed question
RBAC roles (Owner/Contributor/Reader)๐ŸŸก Medium1โ€“2 questions, straightforward
Blob access tiers๐ŸŸก Medium1โ€“2 questions, cost optimisation angle
Azure Monitor vs Service Health vs Status๐ŸŸก MediumEasy marks if you know the distinction
Availability Zones vs Availability Sets๐ŸŸก MediumCommonly confused
SLA uptime figures๐ŸŸข Lower1 question, memorise the table
