A clear, honest map of the Microsoft certification landscape โ where to start, which certs lead where, and how to build a path that matches your career goals.
The Microsoft Certification Landscape
Microsoft offers over 100 certifications across Azure, Microsoft 365, Security, Data, and AI. For most people entering or progressing in a tech career, only a small subset of these are worth your time. This guide focuses on the certifications that have genuine career value and real market demand in 2026.
Microsoft organises certifications into four levels:
Expert โ 2โ5 years experience recommended. Requires passing a prerequisite Associate exam. AZ-305, AZ-400.
Specialty โ Deep focus on a specific technology. SAP on Azure, Azure Virtual Desktop, etc.
๐ก Where most people go wrong: They try to jump straight to Associate-level certifications without any foundation. Or they collect Fundamentals certifications without progressing. Neither extreme is optimal โ use Fundamentals to build confidence and conceptual clarity, then move to Associates for career impact.
Where to Start โ The Universal First Step
If you're new to Microsoft cloud technology, AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals is the right starting point for almost everyone. Here's why:
It covers cloud concepts that underpin every other Microsoft certification
It's achievable in 2 weeks with focused study โ a quick confidence win
It demonstrates baseline cloud knowledge to employers
It establishes the vocabulary you'll use throughout your Microsoft certification journey
At ยฃ130 it's the lowest-cost Microsoft certification exam
The only people who should skip AZ-900 are those who already have significant Azure hands-on experience and are going straight for AZ-104 or another Associate-level exam.
Non-technical security awareness roles. Good before SC-300.
MS-900
Microsoft 365 services
IT admins or business users in Microsoft 365 environments.
DP-900
Azure data concepts
Data analysts and engineers entering the Microsoft data stack.
AI-900
Azure AI concepts
Anyone wanting to understand Azure AI and machine learning services.
โ ๏ธ Don't collect Fundamentals certifications for the sake of it. SC-900 + AZ-900 + MS-900 on a CV looks like certificate farming. Pick the one most relevant to your target role and move to Associate level as quickly as realistic.

What Employers Actually Value
Based on UK job postings in 2026, the Microsoft certifications most frequently listed as required or desirable:
AZ-104 โ Listed in the majority of Azure Administrator and Cloud Engineer roles
SC-300 โ Growing rapidly as organisations implement Zero Trust and Entra ID
AZ-305 โ Senior cloud architect roles, often paired with AZ-104
AZ-500 โ Security engineer and cloud security specialist roles
The pattern is clear: Associate-level certifications drive significantly more career value than Fundamentals. AZ-900 opens doors to entry-level positions and demonstrates intent โ but AZ-104 or SC-300 is what makes a meaningful salary difference.
